Maharashtra reports 2,19,047 financial fraud cases; Mumbai leads with ₹12,404.12 crore in losses

Maharashtra recorded 2,19,047 cases of financial fraud in 2024, involving a total of ₹38,872.14 crore, as per data from the state’s Home Department. Mumbai, the largest city in the state, saw the highest number of fraud incidents, with 51,873 cases, resulting in a financial loss of ₹12,404.12 crore. This made Mumbai the leading region in both the number of financial fraud cases and the total amount involved.

Pune city followed with 22,059 reported cases of financial fraud, amounting to ₹5,122.66 crore in losses. The larger Pune district as a whole recorded 42,802 cases of fraud. This includes 16,115 cases in Pimpri-Chinchwad, leading to a loss of ₹3,291.25 crore, and 4,628 cases in Pune Rural, amounting to ₹434.35 crore in losses. The data indicates that Pune city and its surrounding areas are major contributors to the overall fraud statistics.

Thane district also recorded a significant number of financial fraud cases, with 35,388 incidents across the region. The breakdown of cases includes 20,892 in Thane city, 13,260 in Navi Mumbai, and 1,236 in Thane Rural. The total financial loss in the district reached ₹8,583.61 crore. In addition, the combined areas of Mira Bhayander and Vasai Virar reported 11,754 cases, with financial losses amounting to ₹1,431.18 crore.

Nagpur city reported 11,875 financial fraud cases, while Nagpur Rural had 1,620 cases, resulting in a total financial loss of ₹1,491.07 crore in the region. Nashik district saw 9,169 cases, including 6,381 in Nashik city and 2,788 in Nashik Rural, with a total financial loss of ₹1,047.32 crore. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district recorded 6,090 cases of fraud, involving ₹543.61 crore in losses, while Amravati district had 2,778 cases, resulting in ₹223.059 crore in financial losses.

Solapur district reported 3,457 cases of financial fraud, with a total loss of ₹394.54 crore. In addition, several other districts also saw significant numbers of financial fraud cases. Buldhana reported 1,531 cases, Chandrapur had 1,792 cases, and Latur recorded 1,624 cases. The financial losses in these districts amounted to ₹239.19 crore, ₹175.39 crore, and ₹240.45 crore, respectively. The ongoing rise in financial fraud across the state has led authorities to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to financial transactions promptly.
